In our Early Years Foundation Stage, we focus on nurturing the whole child, supporting their development across seven key areas of learning.
The Foundation Stage Curriculum
We believe that the early years should be a joyful, exciting and nurturing experience, where every child feels valued, supported and inspired to learn. In our Foundation Stage, children learn through a balance of carefully planned activities, exploration and play, helping them develop confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.
Our warm and welcoming environment encourages children to investigate, create, ask questions and make discoveries. While children enjoy a wide range of engaging activities, every experience is thoughtfully planned to support their learning and development. Learning through play is at the heart of what we do, enabling children to learn naturally, build relationships and develop important skills at their own pace.
Led by Ms Gharoo, our experienced and dedicated Foundation Stage team works hard to ensure that every child feels happy, safe and confident. We recognise that each child is unique and provide opportunities that celebrate their individual interests, strengths and achievements.
The Foundation Stage curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and covers seven key areas of learning and development:
Prime Areas
These areas are central to your child’s early development:
Communication and Language
Developing confident speaking, listening and understanding skills so children can express themselves clearly.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Helping children build friendships, grow in confidence, and manage their feelings in a supportive environment.
Physical Development
Encouraging movement, coordination and a healthy, active lifestyle both indoors and outdoors.
Specific Areas
As children grow in confidence, we expand their learning into four key areas:
Literacy
Laying strong foundations in reading and writing, fostering a lifelong love of stories and language.
Mathematics
Building early number skills, problem-solving abilities and a curiosity about how maths works in everyday life.
Understanding the World
Inspiring children to explore, ask questions and make sense of the world around them
Expressive Arts and Design
Encouraging creativity, imagination and self-expression through art, music and role play.
Children also enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities that help to develop coordination, confidence and wellbeing.
Learning is organised around engaging themes and experiences that spark curiosity and imagination. Through stories, creative activities, practical experiences and exploration, children are encouraged to develop new skills and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
We work closely with families to support each child’s learning journey. Children’s progress is carefully observed throughout the year, allowing us to celebrate achievements and identify next steps in learning.
We take pride in celebrating children’s work and achievements, which are displayed throughout the classroom to help build confidence, self-esteem and a sense of belonging.
From the moment they arrive each day, children are encouraged to become increasingly independent. They are given opportunities to make choices, take responsibility and develop problem-solving skills, while also benefiting from focused teaching sessions that guide, challenge and support their learning.
Our aim is simple: to provide every child with a happy, secure and stimulating start to their school life, laying the foundations for future success both in and beyond the classroom.
English and Mathematics
From Reception to Year 4, our class teachers deliver English and Mathematics lessons, building strong relationships with pupils and ensuring consistent, personalised support. From Year 5 onwards, children benefit from specialist teaching, with five lessons each week led by both our Head of English and Head of Mathematics, providing expert guidance as they prepare for the next stage of their education.
In English, we place great emphasis on developing confident, imaginative writers. Children explore a rich variety of literary genres and writing styles, inspiring them to express themselves with clarity and creativity. A strong focus on spelling, grammar and structure underpins all work. Our reading programme nurtures a love of books while helping pupils become thoughtful, independent readers and critical thinkers. Opportunities to share their work through; performances, competitions and publications. This gives the children a real sense of purpose and pride, while offering a glimpse beyond the classroom.
In Mathematics, our curriculum builds on the National Curriculum, ensuring all core objectives are securely met while extending learning to include key 11+ topics. This enriched approach helps pupils feel confident and well-prepared for senior school entrance assessments. Weekly differentiated homework supports each child’s progress, either reinforcing or extending classroom learning. We recognise that every child learns differently, and our lessons reflect this—often incorporating practical, hands-on resources that bring mathematical concepts to life and deepen understanding.
Through expert teaching, high expectations and a supportive approach, we ensure our pupils develop the skills, confidence and enthusiasm they need to succeed.
We believe that a truly effective education is built on balance. Alongside strong academic foundations, our pupils benefit from a rich and varied curriculum that nurtures creativity, confidence and wellbeing. All children take part in weekly swimming lessons, developing vital life skills and a love of physical activity, while our Art lessons provide space for imagination and self-expression to flourish. This balanced approach ensures every child is supported to grow not just academically, but personally and creatively too.
