Reception – The Early Years Foundation Stage
A first glance into our Foundation Stage classrooms might give the impression that children are simply “playing” — but in Early Years, play is powerful learning. Young children naturally merge work and play, and our thoughtfully designed environment gives them endless opportunities to explore, experiment, and discover. Every resource, activity, and interaction is carefully planned to nurture curiosity, creativity, and early confidence. Learning through play is the cornerstone of our EYFS, laying the foundations for a lifelong love of learning.

Year 1 (Beech)
The transition from Reception to Year One at Avenue House School is intentionally gentle and supportive. Familiar faces — including both the class teacher and teaching assistant — help children settle quickly into Key Stage One with comfort and enthusiasm.
Year One pupils also benefit from a variety of specialist teachers who bring their subjects to life, enriching the classroom experience and broadening each child’s learning journey. This nurturing yet stimulating environment ensures that the early stages of KS1 are filled with enjoyment, exploration, and growing independence.

Year 2 (Willow)
In Upper Key Stage One, children consolidate the skills, knowledge, and confidence gained in Year One. Year Two provides a purposeful and motivating environment where pupils rise to new challenges and embrace fresh opportunities for growth.
Increasing independence is encouraged throughout the year as children begin to take greater responsibility for their learning. By the time they complete Year Two, pupils are well prepared, confident, and eager for the next exciting step into Key Stage Two.

Year 3 (Oak)
Entering Key Stage Two marks a significant milestone. In Year Three, children recognise that they are now part of the older half of the school, and they take this new responsibility to heart.
Year Three builds on established knowledge while introducing greater challenge, deeper thinking, and broader opportunities. Pupils experience a slightly more formal approach in core subjects such as Mathematics and English, helping them develop the focus, maturity, and study habits required as they progress through the school. They begin to see themselves as role models for younger pupils — a role they take on with pride.

Year 4 (Maple)
Year Four continues to broaden and enrich the curriculum, offering an engaging blend of academic challenge and creative exploration. As pupils deepen their understanding in English and Mathematics, they are also encouraged to think critically, investigate topics independently, and pursue areas of personal interest.
Self expression, confidence, and curiosity are at the heart of Year Four. Each child plays an active role in shaping their learning journey as they develop the skills needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Year 5 (Pine)
In Year Five, pupils start to look ahead to life beyond Avenue House School. With small class sizes and a strong understanding of each child as an individual, we are well placed to guide families through the senior school journey.
Pupils build on previous learning by strengthening organisation, time management, and personal responsibility. Core subjects are consolidated before gradually introducing examination techniques and exposure to test style questions. This balanced approach ensures that children grow academically while maintaining confidence, wellbeing, and enthusiasm for learning.

Year 6 (Cedar)
Year Six combines purposeful preparation for senior school entrance exams and interviews with continued access to a broad, enriching curriculum. Our small class sizes allow for exceptional pastoral care, ensuring that every child feels supported, motivated, and reassured throughout the process.
Pupils develop strong study habits, resilience, and independence as they work towards the challenges of the 11+. Just as importantly, the inclusive and encouraging atmosphere celebrates all achievements — academic, personal, and creative.
The final year at Avenue House School is a meaningful one: a time of accomplishment, reflection, and excitement for the future. Children leave us as confident, well rounded individuals, ready to take on the next chapter of their educational journey.
